YPND Pentland Airstrip - Australia is a small dirt strip that provides aeromedical services by the Royal Flying Doctor, to Pentland town and the surrounding district.
This replaces the default Pentland Airfield and includes the following features:
- Runway 06-24 with edge lighting. (An unusual feature for a dirt strip, but it's there in real life!)
- Three small general aviation parking spots (to start cold and dark).
The default had parking, but it was inappropriate with 6 small GA spots and fuel all located in the adjacent horse paddock. (It was just wrong!) - Dirt taxiways for AI flights (they're indistinguishable from the runway by us humans!)
- A windsock. (There's one in real life too.)
- A Street Light on a pole to illuminate the parking in low light conditions. (Can't recall if there's one in real life.)
- Horses! Yep, right where I saw them.
Pentland is a rural town and locality in the Charters Towers Region, Queensland, Australia. In the 2016 census, the locality of Pentland had a population of 306 people. Wikipedia
This little town has a place in my heart, as there's a lot of history here for my ancestors.
I recently went there and have included some images of the real airfield!
Interestingly, the Royal Flying Doctor actually landed in a Kingair 350 and I got to talk to the pilot, doctor and nurses.
