C-17 Japan Air Force

Japanese government exclusive aircraft [1st:B744 (1991-2019) 2nd:B77W (2018-) :

The Cabinet of Japan decided to purchase two B747-400 in 1987 in order to have aircraft with worldwide operating range.

They were replaced by B777-300ER in the fiscal year 2019.

 

C-17 was a candidate to replace the C-1 in Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), but was not adopted because some airfields in Japan couldn't be used and the maximum cruise speed was lower than the performance requirement.

Ads in the "JSDF Equipment Yearbook" and other publications in the late 1990s were accompanied by illusts of C-17 painted as Japanese government exclusive aircraft. (Ideas from here)
