The Belfry of Bethune is located in the town of Bethune , in the region of Hauts-de-France in France.
The monument was classified as a Historic Monument in 1862 . It is one of the 23 belfries classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, including the list of belfries in Belgium and France .
The Belfry of Béthune was built in 1346 . Initially made of wood, it was destroyed by a fire. In 1388 , during the Hundred Years War, the Marquis Guillaume Ier Namur allows a reconstruction of the building in sandstone to establish a more robust one. In 1437, a third floor was added by the aldermen and a carillon of six bells in 1546.
In 1553 , Charles Quint , who took the city, completed the carillon with bells from Thérouanne.
The Cloth Hall was placed around the building but was destroyed in a fire in 1664, leaving the belfry alone and isolated in the center of the square.
In 1773 , the carillon of 6 bells was replaced by 36 new bells by campanist Philippe le Corsin.
In 1914 , the World War I broke out. The city of Béthune found itself at the heart of the conflict for 4 years and left a lookout in the monument to prevent any possible fire in the building. In May 1918, bombardments destroyed the campanile and the carillon. However, the monument withstood the bombardments and the fire which followed it thanks to the surrounding dwellings .
It was decided to leave the belfry alone, in the center of the Grand-Place, despite the proposal of Louis-Marie Cordonnier, then responsible for the rehabilitation of the city center, to join the town hall. The reconstruction is done under the authority of Paul Degez and historical monuments in order to reproduce it identically. In 1921, reconstruction began with the repair of the roof and the bell tower. The degraded stones are replaced by sandstone stones from the old Saint-Vaast church, destroyed during the world conflict.
The tower has a height of 33 meters and is surmounted by a campanile of 17 meters, itself surmounted by a dragon named Beffy.
The belfry served as a model for the logotype of the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.
This mod is completed by Bethune city hall. Originally buily in 1811, the city hall was destroyed during World War I.
The candidacy of Jacques Alleman is retained by the municipality for the reconstruction. The architect is forced to respect the wishes of the city and only has a plot of 15 meters wide and 30 meters deep in order to erect the new town hall .
Jacques Alleman adopts an Art Deco style. He opts for the same architectural solutions for all the buildings in the square. Concerning the facade of the town hall, he decided to affix the decorations of the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre, awarded by the President of the French Republic Raymond Poincaré onDecember 28, 1919in tribute to the city's sacrifices during the First World War.
After eleven years of waiting, Béthune has a new town hall . It is inaugurated on April 7, 1929 by Mayor Alexandre Ponnelle .
On October 04, 2001, the town hall is classified as an historic monument for its stained glass windows in hammered slabs, its ironwork and its mosaics.
The belfry and city hall have been recreated manually from various photos and videos from the internet and comes with a POI for the belfry.
