The Château de Monbazillac is located in the town of Monbazillac , in the French department of Dordogne. It is classified as a historic monument by decree of February 20 , 1941.
It is surrounded by a renowned vineyard, on the edge of a plateau overlooking the Dordogne , facing Bergerac .
The castle was built by Charles d'Aydie around 1550 on a very simple plan: a rectangle confined to the corners of four large circular towers. Access is via a fixed bridge with two arches. Defenses are composed of machicolations, loopholes, battlements and walkway. A well exists in one of the rooms.
The Huguenot Louis de Bouchard d'Aubeterre bought the castle in 1607 , which in 1666 became the property of Pierre Barraud. In 1685 the edict of Fontainebleau was signed , the edict of Nantes was revoked. The widow of Pierre Barraud abjures Protestantism to become Catholic.
In 1777 , François Hilaire de Bacalan (1728-1804) bought the castle. In 1790, he became mayor of Monbazillac and abandoned his particle. The castle goes through the French Revolution without damage.
In 1960, the château was bought by the Cave Coopérative de Monbazillac , which markets the wine from its 25 hectares of vines that surround the château. The castle becomes a museum thanks to the help of Jean Secret (1904-1981).
The castle has been recreated manually from various photos and videos from the internet and comes with its own lights and POI.
